Sunamganj, Dec 18 (bdnews24.com)—At least 35 people, all women and children, have drowned as a boat capsized in the Surma River in Sunamganj.
Around 10 people are still missing since the boat capsized.
The boat, heading towards Itna from Bholaganj, was carrying around 50 passengers.
Of them, only five-six male passengers could swim shore.
Twelve of the deceased were identified as Nima Begum, 7, 'Rafiqul', 8, 'Sabbir', 7, 'Sadiqul', 4, 'Akash', 12, 'Taslima', 12, 'Kakon', 10, 'Tawhida', 8, 'Sinthi', 6, 'Miti', 1, 'Anufa', 28, and 'Husna', 32.
The deceased were from Itna of Mithamoin in Kishoreganj.
Jamalganj UNO Abul Hashem told bdnews24.com that the boat sank after it was hit by a sand-laden trawler around 9:30pm on Saturday at Alipur under Sonarbagh Union.
Sonarnagh Union chairman Azhar Hossain Bablu said he counted 35 bodies, nine of who were children.
Hashem said, "Local people have started rescue operation, but it is hindered due to fogs and cold."
