Dhaka, Jan 16 (bdnews24.com) — The High Court has stayed the ad interim ban on the newly elected executive committee of the National Press Club, enabling it to take over charge.
Justice Mir Hasmat Ali on Sunday passed the stay order upon a petition by the new committee.
Dhaka's Fourth Assistant Judge's Court on Jan 10 had stayed functioning of the new committee and ordered handover of its responsibilities back to the outgoing committee.
The ban came following a petition on Jan 5 by the Pro-Awami League panel, led by Golam Sarwar and Saiful Islam, claiming the election results illegal.
The BNP-backed panel, led by Kamaluddin Sabuj and Syed Abdal Ahmed, swept the election to the executive committee held on Dec 31.
Afzal H Khan, one of the defendants' lawyers, told reporters, "The High Court has stayed the lower court order until the case is disposed of. With this, the barrier to the new committee to take over charge is removed."
