The Dhaka Metropolitan Police, or DMP, has warned that it will take action if Hizb ut-Tahrir, the banned Islamist organisation, holds the programme it announced at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Friday.

The DMP issued a press release on the matter on Thursday.

The release reiterated that Hizb ut-Tahrir is a banned organisation under Bangladesh’s laws.

The Bangladesh government banned the organisation as a “threat to public security” on Oct 22, 2009.

According to the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, all activities of any banned organisation – including meetings, rallies, processions, the distribution of posters, leaflets and other means of propaganda – are punishable under the law.

The Dhaka police now say that they will take action if the banned group holds meetings, rallies, or propagates any other means of propaganda.

Hizb ut-Tahrir has put up posters in different parts of Dhaka city – including the Dhaka University campus – announcing a programme at Baitul Mukarram on Friday. They also distributed leaflets in several locations.
