He, fighting on ruling party's 'boat' symbol, beat his rival Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Golam Sarwar Hiru by 7,820 votes on Thursday in the election boycotted by main opposition BNP.

Hiru with his ‘hand-fan’ symbol managed to bag 57,993 votes.

Returning Officer Mostofa Faruk announced the result around 10pm after counting ended.

The Barguna-2 seat, comprising three Upazilas Patharghata, Betagi and Bamna, had fallen vacant following the death of MP Golam Sabur Tulu in a road accident on July 26. Tulu, who was also from Awami League, was elected MP in 2008 national election.

The by-poll on Thursday took place only a few months before the 10th parliamentary election.

It was peaceful and no irregularities were alleged, said the Returning Officer.

Mostofa Faruk said 53.86 percent of the voters exercised their franchise -- a low turnout by usual standards but understandable as the main opposition party was not in the fray and there was heavy rains after 11am.

Rimon cast his vote at the Madartoli High School voting centre at 8am and Hiru at 9am at the Boroitola Subarna Government Primary School.

Deputy Commissioner of Barguna Md Adbul Wahab Bhuiyan told bdnews24.com that 19 mobile courts were deployed in the three Upazilas to maintain law and order.

The district’s Superintendent of Police Shyamal Kumar Nath said 3,944 law keepers, comprising police, RAB, BGB, Coast Guard, Ansar and VDP personnel, were deployed during the by-polls.
