A 3-year-old boy was asleep. His mother Shilpi Khatun had left him with his father and gone to a pharmacy to buy medicine for herself.

A short while later, she returned home and found her son Habib dead.

Police recovered Habib’s body from Dhaka’s Beraid on Apr 27 and detained his father, identified only as Shahin.

The following day, the mother's maternal aunt Balika Begum filed a murder case at Badda Police Station.

Shahin was later shown arrested in the case and produced before a court.

According to the case details, Shahin and his wife Shilpi lived in a rented house in Beraid with their two sons. Around 9.30pm on Apr 17, Shilpi went out to buy medicine.

Once she left the house, Shahin bolted the door and strangled Habib to death inside the room.

When the mother returned home, she repeatedly knocked on the door before Shahin eventually opened it, after which she found her son lying dead on the floor.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Kamal Hossain of the Prosecution Divison said Shahin has given a confessional statement admitting the killing in court.

Asked about the motive, investigating officer SI Jamal Hossain of Badda Police Station said the killing stemmed from marital conflict, adding that Shahin was addicted to drugs.

“He demanded money from his wife to go and meet his mother. But his wife did not give him any money. That led to an argument between them,” the officer said.

He said Shilpi had left the child asleep while she went to buy medicine and had taken their elder 5-year-old son with her.

“The suspect locked the room from inside and later strangled the child,” SI Jamal said.

Police said the investigation report would be submitted after receiving the postmortem findings.

Case complainant Balika said Shahin was addicted to drugs and used to torture her niece.

“He took money the day before and demanded money again the next day. When money was not given, he killed his own son,” she added.

Shahin, originally from Gaibandha’s Saghata, had moved to Dhaka for work but fell into addiction, according to Balika.

She added that Shilpi was unwell with neck pain.

The plaintiff noted that Shilpi pounded on the door repeatedly upon her return, but Shahin would not open it.

As a crowd began to gather, he finally relented. "Shilpi entered the room and found Habib dead. Shahin has admitted to killing the boy," she said.

Balika said Shilpi collapsed after seeing the scene and has since remained mentally traumatised.

“Since then, she has barely been able to speak properly,” she added. “We left her with her mother, where she is now receiving treatment.”

Shilpi’s comments could not be taken because of her mental condition.
