Police have recovered the half-decomposed bodies of a teenager and her mother from the home of a tutor in Dhaka’s Keraniganj 21 days after they went missing.
The bodies were retrieved from the second floor of a building in the Muktirbagh area on Thursday night following a 999 call, according to Keraniganj Model Police Station Inspector Ilias Hossain.
The dead -- 14-year-old Zubaida Rahman Fatema and her mother 31-year-old Rokeya Rahman -- had been missing since Dec 25.
After the bodies were recovered, the police took Fatema's tutor Mim Akhter, Mim's husband Humayun, and his teenage sister Nusrat Nurjahan into custody for questioning.
Afterwards, police arrested Mim and Nurjahan “based on preliminary confessions” in a case filed filed over the incident.
Inspector Elias said, "On the evening of Dec 25, schoolgirl Fatema went missing after going to study with her tutor nearby. Her mother Rokeya Rahman also went missing when she went out to look for her daughter."
Shahin Ahmed filed a general diary (GD) with the police on Dec 27 after he “failed to find” his wife and daughter, police said.
Elias said, "Locals grew suspicious when a foul smell began to emanate from tutor Mim's house on Thursday evening. After the police were informed, the body of Rokeya Rahman was recovered from under a bed in Mim’s house and teenager Fatema’s body was recovered from the ceiling of the bathroom."
He said that the investigation had initially considered the incident a “pre-meditated murder”, adding: "During the initial interrogation, Mim Akhter and her sister admitted that the murder was committed due to a prior feud."
“According to plan”, Mim and her sister first strangled Fatema to death using a veil. Later, Mim called Rokeya Rahman to her house, and when she arrived home, she was also killed by strangulation.
Inspector Elias said, "After the murder, they continued with their regular lives with the bodies in the house. The veil used in the murder has been recovered."
