Muhammad Yunus, chief advisor of the interim government, has congratulated BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on his party’s decisive victory in the parliamentary election.

On Saturday, he sent a message to the BNP chief, noting that the people’s clear mandate represents an important milestone for democratic continuity and institutional stability in Bangladesh.

Voting took place in 299 of the country’s 300 parliamentary constituencies on Thursday, alongside a nationwide referendum.

Results for 297 seats have been declared, while two constituencies in Chattogram await court directives, and Sherpur-3 remains suspended following the death of a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate.

According to the Election Commission, BNP has won 209 seats, regaining its long-term ally Jamaat-e-Islami as part of the opposition bloc.

Addressing Tarique directly, Yunus expressed his confidence that his leadership would steer the country toward an “inclusive and development-oriented future”.

He remarked that the wisdom and democratic values of the incoming administration would be essential in managing the weighty responsibilities of statecraft.

The chief advisor also invoked the political legacy of Tarique’s parents, referencing the state philosophy of late president Ziaur Rahman and the uncompromising commitment to democracy shown by former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

He hoped their ideals would light the path for the new leadership.

Touching upon the current global context, Yunus pointed out that Bangladesh stands at the threshold of fresh possibilities.

He noted that the nation requires coordinated intellect and foresight to navigate economic transformation, technological shifts, climate resilience, and regional diplomacy.

Under Tarique’s guidance, he expects national unity to deepen while the rule of law and accountable governance grow stronger.

Yunus expressed his gratitude for the cooperation provided by the BNP during the interim government’s tenure.

He praised the party leader’s “constructive role and positive stance in maintaining a tolerant democratic environment” during a sensitive period of transition.

Concluding his message, Yunus wished success for all initiatives aimed at public welfare and justice, praying for the patience and firmness required to serve the people.
