Health authorities in Cumilla have confirmed the death of another child from measles, raising the total number of fatalities in the district to eight.

The Civil Surgeon’s Office said on Thursday that the child from Homna Upazila died on Apr 21 while undergoing treatment at Dhaka North City Corporation Hospital.

Later laboratory tests confirmed the child had measles.

Piyas Ahmed, a medical officer at the Cumilla Civil Surgeon’s Office, explained that the child died in Dhaka last month, but was added to the district's death toll after the test results came back positive.

In the last 24 hours, 23 people have been hospitalised with measles symptoms in Cumilla, with three cases officially confirmed through testing.

During the same period, 26 patients were discharged from different hospitals.

The civil surgeon said 105 measles cases have so far been confirmed among 1,560 patients reported in the district this year.

He added that seven child deaths had been reported with symptoms, with one later confirmed as measles after lab tests.
