Three children from the same family have died after drowning in a water-filled pit in Moulvibazar’s Kulaura Upazila.
The incident occurred in Madhya Fatiguli village under Karmadha Union, confirmed Kulaura Police chief Moniruzzaman Molla.
Local resident Junayed Ahmed said the heavy rainfall and nor'wester on Wednesday morning had waterlogged nearby fields.
Around 1:30pm, the three children went out to play in the stagnant water.
A large pit, created by earth-cutting in the field, had also filled with rainwater.
The children reportedly fell into the pit and drowned while playing.
A passerby raised the alarm, prompting locals to rescue the children and take them to a physician’s chamber in Rabir Bazar, where they were pronounced dead.
The bodies were taken home by their relatives.
Moniruzzaman said officers have reached the scene.
"If the family has no complaints and magisterial permission is obtained, the bodies may be handed over without a post-mortem examination," he added.
