Another child with measles symptoms dies in Mymensingh Medical

An 11-month-old child with measles symptoms has died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) in the latest 24-hour count.

This has pushed up the death toll due to measles and related symptoms at the hospital to 37. However, the number of infected patients has decreased slightly, according to Dr Jhantu Sarkar, senior store officer of MMCH, on Monday morning.

The deceased child hailed from Mirzapur village in Tangail Sadar Upazila. He was admitted to the hospital on May 13. The child died on Sunday evening. 

Meanwhile, 14 patients with measles symptoms have been admitted to the hospital in the last 24 hours. Of them, eight have recovered and been discharged from the hospital. Currently 77 children are undergoing treatment in the hospital. 

A total of 1,593 children have been admitted to the hospital with measles symptoms from Mar 17 to Saturday morning. Of these, 1,479 children have recovered and returned home.

MMCH Measles Isolation Ward Focal Person Md Golam Mawla said, “The measles vaccine is starting to work, and the number of children getting sick is decreasing. This has started to reduce the pressure on hospitals.”

“The children who are still dying are suffering from other diseases in addition to measles symptoms,” he said.
