An elderly man has been run over and killed by a bus in Dhaka's Shantinagar.

The victim, identified as 73-year-old Tashikul Islam, was returning home from the mosque after Fajr prayers when the incident occurred around 4:45am on Sunday, according to the police.

“While crossing the road near the Bailey Road entrance at the Shantinagar intersection, the man was struck by a bus and thrown onto the road, suffering serious injuries in the process,” said Sub-Inspector Abu Hanif from Ramna Police Station.

Alerted by local residents, a police patrol team in the area rescued Tashikul in a bloodied state and rushed him to the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 5:30am. There, the on-duty doctor declared him dead, according to SI Hanif.

The body has been kept at the hospital morgue. The bus responsible for the accident has not yet been identified, the officer added.

Tashikul is a native of Rajshahi's Godagari Upazila. He had been living with his family at a house in the capital's Siddheshwari.
