Prime Minister Tarique Rahman says that sports can play the most effective role in keeping youth safe from drugs, social degradation and excessive device “addiction” in the current time.

There is no alternative to sports in building a healthy, strong and talented generation, he said on Friday before the launch of the “Notun Kuri Sports” initiative.

The prime minister said he hopes that “Notun Kuri Sports” will awaken the spirit of discipline, brotherhood, leadership and team unity among children and adolescents. This, he said, will be the main foundation for building an “ideal and strong” state.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is launching “Notun Kuri Sports” nationwide from Saturday with the aim of aiding the physical and mental development of children and adolescents.

Tarique said, “The historical background of the traditional Notun Kuri programme for developing the talents of children and adolescents in various fields is the inspiration behind this new effort of the current government to find young sports talents from all over the country with the aim of better organising the country’s sports arena.”

Under the programme, talented boys and girls aged between 12 and 14 will be identified and given a structured and professional platform to develop their potential, the premier said.

The prime minister said, “We made a clear promise to the people of the country that we would establish sports as a prestigious profession and ensure the economic security of the players. The government has already started implementing that promise made to the people. As part of this, Notun Kuri Sports is being started to find new sports talents among children and adolescents.

“The government has already started working towards that goal so that adolescents who display their talent in sports can take it on as a profession without facing any financial uncertainty in the future and can securely pursue it as a career.”

In his message, Tarique said that effective steps have been taken to ensure world-class training and modern facilities for selected talented players through state sports scholarships at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan (BKSP).

“Our goal is to nurture and train sought-after sports talents from all across the country in such a way that in the future, these sports talents will become the country’s greatest sporting stars in various sports events.”
