Police have arrested four members of the Dhaka district Detective Branch (DB) after an angry mob in Narayanganj’s Rupganj Upazila assaulted and injured three of them for allegedly trying to abduct a local youth.
The “victim” filed a case against six people including the arrestees on Friday night, said Narayanganj’s Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Mehdi Islam.
The arrestees are Sub-Inspector Mamun Matubbar, Sub-Inspector Aman Ullah and constables Akash Ahmed and Kabir, who is identified by a single name.
According to the case dossier, the suspects in plain clothes tried to abduct 30-year-old Amit Hasan Miraj from the Bhulta Gausia area on Thursday afternoon when DB officers Mamun and Aman and Constable Kabir were caught by locals, who beat them severely.
Later, the three policemen were taken to the nearby Araihazar Upazila Health Complex, from where they were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Senior ASP Mehdi said they are undergoing treatment at the DMCH in police custody. Constable Akash was arrested in Dhaka in the early hours of Friday.
Amid told bdnews24.com that the four DB members, identifying themselves as CID personnel, and two of their associates, detained him in a public toilet in Gausia under the pretext of investigating an online casino.
“They checked my mobile. When they found nothing on my mobile, they tried to force me into a car. But as I screamed, locals intervened and beat them up.”
Rupganj Police also confirmed the DB members were in plain clothes and its chief AHM Salauddin said the two associates -- Abu Bakkar Siddique and Md Selim—are on the run.
The process of taking departmental action against the arrestees is under way.
