Five people have died after drinking what police say was “bootleg liquor” in Shajahanpur Upazila in Bogura.

On Monday, Shajahanpur Police chief Shafiqul Islam Palash said Ansar member Ranju Mia, 30, died while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in the early hours of the day.

The other four dead reportedly due to similar reasons are Mizanur Rahman Mandal Liton, 50, autorickshaw driver Nasidul Islam, 27,  truck driver Abdul Manik Akand, 30, and autorickshaw driver Abdullah Al Kafi, 30.

Police said five men drank alcohol together in Bejora Madhyapara of the Upazila, on Oct 2.

The next morning, they began vomiting and experiencing severe stomach pain, later admitting they had consumed bootleg liquor.

Their families took them to the hospital one by one.

Liton died on Oct 7 while under treatment. His body was handed over to his family without a postmortem at their request.

Nasidul died around 10pm on Oct 9, followed by Akand and Kafi on Oct 10.

Doctors said the victims’ kidneys had failed due to bootleg alcohol consumption.

Officer Palash said the body of Ranju would be released after a postmortem examination.

A case of unnatural death has been registered, and further action will be taken if relatives file a complaint, he added.
