The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police has arrested a man accused of using the name and identity of Prime Minister’s Assistant Private Secretary Abdur Rahman Sunny to run fake Facebook accounts.

Kakon Rana, 35, was arrested during a CTTC Cyber Crime Investigation Division operation in Dhaka’s Khilkhet on Sunday.

Police said a case was filed with Banani Police over two fake Facebook accounts opened using Sunny’s identity.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Niaz Mehedi said investigators traced Rana’s location through technical analysis before arresting him around 3:30pm.

Six mobile phones and seven SIM cards allegedly used in the fraud were seized.

CTTC said forensic checks found more than 50 accounts on the devices, including two fake accounts in Sunny’s name. A fake account bearing the name of the premier’s wife Zubaida Rahman was also found logged in.

The seized devices and other digital evidence are being examined. Legal proceedings against Rana are under way as the investigation continues.
