PM gives go-ahead for highway linking Bhola to mainland road network

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities to move ahead with plans for a highway that would connect the island district of Bhola directly to the national road network.

The Rahmatpur-Hizla-Mehendiganj-Bhola route was selected from three proposals discussed at a meeting on the proposed Bhola-Barishal bridge at the prime minister’s Tejgaon office on Saturday.

Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu said the route, proposed by the Roads and Highways Department, was chosen as part of efforts to establish direct road links between Bhola, Barishal and Dhaka.

The plan would involve widening existing roads, building new stretches and constructing three small bridges. Authorities have been instructed to quickly assess the project’s feasibility and viability.

Shiplu said the prime minister stressed the need for an integrated road network to overcome geographical barriers and improve connectivity and opportunities for trade.

Bhola’s riverine location has long made its residents heavily dependent on waterways for travel. The proposed highway is expected to reduce that dependence and cut travel times and costs.

“The major advantages of the Hizla-Mehendiganj-Bhola route are the savings in distance, time and cost,” Shiplu said.

"It could become an effective route for travel between Bhola and Dhaka and Barishal in particular."
