Police have arrested Awami League leader, former minister of textiles and jute, and Gazi Group Chairman Golam Dastagir Gazi.

He was arrested from Dhaka’s Shantinagar at 2:45am on Sunday, according to Molla Mohammad Khalid Hossain, chief of Paltan Police Station.

“He was taken to the Detective Branch office after his arrest at Shantinagar’s Pirer Goli.”

Asked whether Gazi had been arrested in connection with a case, the OC said: “A decision has not yet been made on the matter.”

Most leaders of the Awami League have gone into hiding since the party’s President Sheikh Hasina resigned her premiership and fled the country in the face of a student-led mass movement on Aug 5.

Several former ministers and Awami League leaders have since been arrested over the past few days. They have been shown arrested in cases over the casualties during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement protests and remanded for interrogation.

Gazi and Hasina are among 105 suspects accused in the killing of 17-year-old Roman Mia, a student in tenth grade at Naba Kishaloy High School in Narayanganj.

Gazi had been elected as the Awami League candidate for the Narayaganj-1 seat in the 12th parliamentary elections. On Aug 5, after the fall of the government, a Gazi Group factory was attacked and looted in the Ruposhi area of Rupganj.
