Nine witnesses have testified in two corruption cases filed against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy over alleged irregularities in the allocation of plots in the Purbachal New Town Project.

The testimonies were recorded on Tuesday by Dhaka’s Fifth Special Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun.

No evidence was taken, however, in the related case against Hasina’s daughter Saima Wazed Putul.

The witnesses included officials from the judiciary, land registry, Dhaka South City Corporation, and the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.

ACC prosecutor Sultan Mahmud said four testified in Hasina’s case and five in Joy’s case.

“But no testimony was taken today in the case against Sheikh Hasina’s daughter Putul."

The next hearing has been set for Oct 15.

On Jul 31, two special judge's courts framed charges against 23 people, including Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and their children in six cases linked to the allocation of six 10-katha plots in the Purbachal New Town Project.

Witness testimony began on Aug 11, when complainants first appeared in three of the cases. Since then, 17 people have testified.

Among the accused are 16 senior government and RAJUK officials, as well as former state minister Sharif Ahmed and former principal secretary to the prime minister.

Hasina has remained in India since being ousted in a student-led mass uprising on Aug 5, 2024. Her family members are also abroad.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched its probe in December last year, later filing six separate cases. Hasina has been named in all of them, with her son Joy and daughter Putul also implicated.

The ACC alleges that while in office, Hasina and her family members abused power to secure the allocation of plots in Sector 27 of the Purbachal Housing Project, despite being ineligible.
