Police have dispersed garment workers who tried to take to the streets in Dhaka’s Mirpur over their demand for a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000.

Workers from several factories in Mirpur-14 attempted to march towards Mirpur-10 on Monday morning, the third consecutive day of protests, but police stopped them.

According to police, officers who had taken positions in the area blocked the march. When the workers tried to push past them, police chased them away, forcing them to return to their factories.

Zarina Khatun, duty officer at Mirpur Model Police Station, said workers had tried to take to the streets again in the morning amid unrest that began on Saturday.

She said police had dispersed those marching from Mirpur-14 towards Mirpur-10 and the workers had since returned to their factories.

“The situation is now under our control,” she said in the morning.

A visit to the Mirpur-10 roundabout around 10am on Monday found police on alert, with traffic moving normally and no workers gathered in the area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Joint Commissioner (Crime Prevention-North) Mahidul Islam said police had taken a strong position in Mirpur-10 and few workers had tried to reach the area.

Some workers had attempted to take to the streets around Mirpur-14 earlier in the morning, but police had dispersed them, he said.

He described those seeking to vandalise vehicles and set fires despite the prime minister's meeting and announcement on Sunday as “troublemakers”.

Clashes, meanwhile, broke out between workers and police in Mirpur-2 around 11am and were still continuing at 11:15am.

Unrest began among workers at several Mirpur garment factories on Saturday. It started with work stoppages and protests inside factories before spreading to the roads.

On Sunday, tension rose in different parts of Mirpur over worker protests and road blockades.

Police said vehicles were vandalised and set on fire, and clashes with the protesters followed, with several people detained.

After two days of protests and clashes, additional police personnel have been deployed at Mirpur 10, 11, 12 and 14 on Monday to prevent unrest.
