A clash unfolded at Dhaka’s Kuril after Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal members detained several people from an Awami League procession and began beating them, prompting local residents to step in and pull them away.
Several hundred Awami League leaders and activists brought out the procession around 1pm on Thursday outside Jamuna Future Park at Kuril Bishwa Road.
During the procession, Chhatra Dal members detained four or five people and began beating them separately.
Local residents gathered and intervened, with nearby shopkeepers also joining them.
A video shows a 15- to 16-year-old participant being slapped, detained and taken away. Residents subsequently intervened.
At one point, a Chhatra Dal leader holding an Awami League activist identified himself as the Dhaka Metropolitan Chhatra Dal’s assistant general secretary, without giving his name.
A resident was heard asking, “He was just walking along the road. Why are you detaining him?”
The Chhatra Dal leader replied, “He was participating in the procession. Have you come to save him? Who are you?”
Locals then began shouting, “Who even are you? Is it your responsibility to deal with this? Let them go. You come from another area and detain people from our area? You leave this place.”
They were later seen taking the activist away from the Chhatra Dal leader.
Multimedia reporter Monwar Hossain, who was passing through the area, said several people were detained from the back of the procession and beaten before locals rescued them.
Bhatara Police Station chief Md Mazharul Islam said the procession was brief and participants fled afterwards.
“So far, we have not been able to detain anyone,” he said.
Asked about the rescue, he said: “I have seen the video of one person being rescued.”
