Nine suspects sent to jail over ‘Joy Bangla’ march in Gulshan

Court sends the suspects to jail, a day after 24 others were ordered held on 10-day remand

Nine people arrested after a “Joy Bangla” march in Dhaka’s Gulshan have been sent to jail under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam passed the order on Sunday following a petition by the investigation officer.

The suspects are Rehana Parvin, 43, Md Saiful Islam, 52, Md Jewel Shikdar, 33, Md Nazim Uddin, 34, Md Sahed, 37, Shanto Sheikh, 28, Md Harun Maizbhandari, 55, Khaled Mahmud Faisal, 40, and Md Shafiqul Rahman, 50.

Gulshan Police SI Ruhul Amin sought their detention in jail. 

Prosecutor SI Moktar Hossain said defence lawyers sought bail. The court set Monday for the bail hearing.

Police arrested them in Gulshan on Saturday. Twenty-four others arrested that day were remanded for 10 days.

On Friday, several hundred people marched in Gulshan-1. Police fired two rounds of rubber bullets after two crude bombs were exploded.

SI Md Mahbub Hossain filed the case, naming 118 people and 80-100 unidentified others.
