The government has promoted 31 police officers to the rank of deputy inspector general (DIG) as part of a major shake-up of the force ahead of the national election.

The Ministry of Home Affairs made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday.

The decision comes on the same day the government reshuffled the police service, issuing three separate notifications that reassigned superintendents of police (SPs) in all 64 districts through a lottery, transferred 13 SPs to specialised units, and replaced the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police commissioner.

Under the Representation of the People Order (RPO), officials involved in election duties cannot be transferred from the date the election schedule is announced until 15 days after the results are declared, unless the Election Commission approves the move.
