Police have arrested a woman in connection with the shooting of Motaleb Shikdar, the Khulna divisional chief of the Jatiya Sramik Shakti, the NCP's labour wing.
The woman was apprehended from the Tutpara area under Khulna Sadar Police Station on Monday night, Inspector Taimur Islam of Khulna Metropolitan Detective Police said.
Motaleb, 42, was shot in a rented flat in the Sonadanga area of the city on Monday afternoon.
He is the son of Moslem Shikdar of the Sonadanga Sheikhpara Palli Mangal School area.
Police identified arrestee by a single name as Tonima, also known as Tonni, who is known to be the joint member secretary of Khulna District unit of the NCP's youth affiliate Jubo Shakti.
Authorities did not disclose any further details about her identity.
According to police, Motaleb was staying in the flat rented by Tonima when the shooting occurred. The bullet entered through his ear and exited.
Khulna Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (South) Tajul Islam said CCTV footage shows Motaleb had been staying at the ground-floor flat of ‘Mukta House’ on Road No. 109 near the Al-Aqsa Mosque Memorial since Sunday night.
“He left the house after being shot before 11am on Monday,” the police official said.
Police recovered a bullet casing, five empty liquor bottles, yaba tablets and drug paraphernalia from the flat, Tajul said.
He added that Tonima had been absconding since the incident before being arrested.
“Initial investigation suggests they were involved in anti-social activities at the flat, and the incident took place following a dispute between them,” the deputy commissioner said.
“Several others are involved in this incident. Police are working to bring them to book.”
Motaleb was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital after the shooting. Doctors there said his condition was not critical.
Ashrafun Nahar, wife of the owner of Mukta House, said Tonima had rented the flat about a month ago, introducing herself as an NGO worker.
“She often stayed away from home. After neighbours came to know about her anti-social activities, she was served a notice to vacate the flat this month. The incident occurred before she left,” she said.
Saif Newaz, an organiser of the NCP in Khulna city, said Motaleb is the central organiser of the Jatiya Sramik Shakti and also serves as its Khulna divisional convenor.
“He was working to organise a divisional labour rally in Khulna scheduled to be held in the coming days,” he said.
NCP Khulna Organiser Hameem Ahmed Rahat said he expects law-enforcing agencies to uncover the real cause of the incident.
Mahmudul Hasan Faizullah, coordinator of the NCP’s Khulna District unit, said the party would not comment further as police investigations are ongoing.
