Severe Cyclonic Storm Remal has started crossing the West Bengal-Khepupara coast near southwest of Mongla, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has said.
The storm began lashing the coasts with a wind speed of up to 120kph, meteorologist Shameem Hassan Bhuiyan said at a press conference at 8:15pm on Sunday.
The storm centre was 145 to 310 kilometres from Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Payra and Mongla maritime ports, which have hoisted danger signal No. 10, the highest level of alert.
It would take two more hours for the centre to cross the coastline.
Another five to seven hours will be needed for the entire storm to get ashore.
Meteorologist Abdur Rahman said the edge of the storm already touched the coast in the afternoon and its centre started to lash the area around 6pm.
