A man has jumped to his death from the roof of the 16-storey BIRDEM General Hospital in Dhaka, police say.

The incident occurred around 6:40pm on Tuesday, according to Ramna Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Nayeem Ul Islam.

The deceased was identified as Dipu Sultan Russell, a resident of the Gendaria TS Post Office area in the capital.

"Russell walked up the hospital stairs to the 16th-floor roof by himself.

“Once there, he smoked roughly three cigarettes and peered down over the edge several times before jumping. He died instantly at the scene," the officer said.

Upon receiving the report, police recovered the body and dispatched it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.

According to police sources, Russell suffered from drug addiction and was unemployed.

He had previously undergone treatment at a rehabilitation facility. His ongoing struggle with what is alleged to be substance abuse had also led to a divorce from his wife. They have an 11-year-old child.

Investigating officers believe he may have taken his own life after suffering severe psychological distress brought on by domestic disputes and the breakdown of his marriage.
