A local leader of the BNP’s student wing has been killed and at least 20 others injured in a clash between rival groups in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar Upazila.
The violence broke out around midday on Saturday at Chatlapar Bazar, involving supporters of the “Ulta” and “Molla” factions, Nasirnagar Police Station chief (OC) Md Azharul Islam said.
The deceased has been identified as Sohrab Mia, 28, assistant organising secretary of the Chatlapar Union unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
He was a known supporter of the “Molla” group.
Citing local residents, police said the two groups had been locked in a prolonged rivalry over territorial control, which culminated in a pitched battle using sharp weapons.
The clash lasted for about an hour, during which shops in the local market were vandalised and looted.
Among the injured, three members of the “Molla” group -- Neyamul Mia, Babul Mia and Suraf Mia -- have been admitted to Kishoreganj District Hospital.
Chatlapar Union Parishad Chairman Md Rafiqul Islam said the dispute stemmed from long-standing tensions between the groups. “One person has died. Looting also took place. The entire market is shut.”
“After news of the death spread, nearly 500 shops at Chatlapar Bazar were closed.”
Md Alauddin, a supporter of the Ulta group, claimed their side had long been “harassed” by the rival faction. “They used to beat our people all the time. That’s what led to [Saturday’s] clash.
“They looted around 20 of our shops and took goods worth several crore taka.”
Motahar Hossain, speaking on behalf of the “Molla” group, said the attack was “unprovoked”.
“Aluddin’s men launched a surprise attack on false accusations. Sohrab was struck with a spear and killed. Two more are in critical condition.”
Police have been deployed to the area, but no formal complaint has been filed yet, said OC Azharul.
