Mayor says Eid animal waste removed in Chattogram city by 8pm

Nearly 3,200 workers with 379 vehicles took care of the cleaning, he says

The waste from animals sacrificed on Eid-ul-Azha has been removed from Chattogram city by 7:30pm, according to Mayor Shahadat Hossain.

From a control room at the city’s Dampara around 7:30pm on Thursday, Shahadat announced the development, saying the process had started at 2pm.

The mayor said, "I’ve been supervising the waste collection process since 9am. Nearly 3,200 workers with 379 vehicles including dump trucks, compactors, and payloaders of the city corporation were engaged in the process.

The sites of slaughter were cleaned by sprinkling water and bleaching powder during the cleanliness drive, he said.

Shahadat said steps would be taken if authorities are notified of any animal waste remaining anywhere in the city.

He said, “As there is a culture of offering sacrifices in the afternoon in some places of the city, steps have also been taken to remove that waste.

“Besides, many people offer sacrifices the day after Eid. We’ll remove that waste too.”

Chattogram City Corporation Chief Waste Management Officer Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury told bdnews24.com that an estimated 6,000 tonnes of waste had been removed by the evening.

The total quantity of waste removed will be known later, he said.
