Suspect in 3 cases shot, hacked to death in Khulna

The nature of the killing suggests the attackers harboured intense resentment towards him, police say

A man has been shot and hacked multiple times to death in Khulna.

The incident occurred around 12:15am on Thursday near South Tutpara Boro Khalpar, Shafiqul Islam, chief of Khulna Sadar Police Station said.

The victim, Md Ismail, 36, hailed from South Tutpara Boro Khalpar.

His body has been sent to the morgue of Khulna Medical College Hospital for a postmortem.

According to police and locals, unidentified assailants opened fire targeting Ismail. He was critically injured after being shot in the head. Locals rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Officer Shafiqul said: "Ismail sustained a gunshot wound to the head. The nature of the killing suggests the attackers harboured intense resentment towards him. To ensure his death, they hacked him countless times."

"We have learned initially that he was involved with a criminal gang in Khulna. He has three cases filed against him with Khulna Sadar Police Station, including assault and violations of the Explosives Act. Locals also told us that he was an activist of the Jubo League."

The police officer said investigators collected various pieces of evidence from the scene.

Police are conducting drives to identify and arrest those involved in the killing, while the investigation into the motive behind the murder is continuing.
