A day labourer has allegedly been beaten to death in Munshiganj Sadar Upazila. The attackers left a pipegun and ammunition on the body.
A body was recovered from the Madhya Makhati area of Mollakandi Union around 3am on Friday, said Saiful Alam, chief of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station.
The victim was identified as 44-year-old Chana Majhi, the son of Mohammad Majhi.
Babu Majhi, a cousin of the victim, posted a photo of the body on Facebook, writing: “I will take revenge one by one for the killing of Shipon Majhi…”
Police say Shipon was Babu’s younger brother.
Chana’s wife Fatema Begum said on Friday, “My husband was called away from the house at 3pm on Thursday. He did not return after that. Then, around 11am, they killed my husband and left a weapon on his body.”
OC Saiful said, “Nearly two decades ago, Shipon Majhi killed Chana Majhi’s father Mohammad Majhi. Three months later, Chana Majhi and his six brothers killed Shipon Majhi.”
He said, “On Aug 5, Chana Majhi and his brothers left their village to take shelter in different places. For nine months, Chana Majhi lived with his family in a rented house in the Dekrapara area of the Sadar’s Bajrajoginir Union.”
“At 3pm on Thursday, he was called away from his house and taken to Aldi Bazar. From there, we believe they detained Chana Majhi and killed him. A pipegun and two bullets were left with the body.”
Babu Majhi, who made the Facebook post, was an expatriate living abroad. He returned to Bangladesh after the changeover in government. Attempts were made to contact him over the incident, but he could not be found.
Ataul Karim, a doctor at the emergency department at Munshiganj General Hospital, said that Chana Majhi’s body was brought to the hospital around 3am. His body had multiple signs of injury.
OC Saiful said that the body has been kept at the hospital’s morgue for an autopsy. A case is being prepared over the incident and law enforcers are working to arrest those involved.
