The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested three suspects in a murder case who were “mistakenly” released from Mymensingh Central Jail without securing bail.

The three accused were arrested in Tangail’s Ghatail Upazila around 11pm on Thursday, said Mymensingh RAB-14 Additional Police Superintendent and spokesman Md Shamsuzzaman.

The three arrestees are Md Anis Mia, Rashedul Islam and Zakirul Islam.

They are currently detained at the Mymensingh RAB office. A press conference will be held at 11am on Friday to provide details about their arrest and future legal proceedings, said Shamsuzzaman.

On the evening of Jan 27, the three were released without bail from the Mymensingh Central Jail.

After the incident came to light on Thursday, Mymensingh Senior Jail Superintendent Md Aminul Islam faced questions from the media.

He admitted the incident had occurred and said that a prison official had “mistakenly” released three suspects in a murder case.

After massive uproar over the incident, the authorities quickly formed an investigation committee. At the same time, Zakaria Imtiaz, the deputy district officer of Mymensingh Central Prison, was temporarily suspended on charges of negligence of duty.

Mymensingh Divisional Prisons Deputy Inspector General (DIG Prisons) Mohammad Touhidul Islam said that a three-member investigation panel has been formed to probe the incident, headed by Dhaka Division-2 DIG Prisons Tipu Sultan. Further steps will be taken after they submit their report within the next three working days.

He said, "The accused were released after mistaking the summons for bail based on faulty information. This is basically the mistake of the officer in charge. If the summons was read properly, this incident would not have happened."

"The deputy district magistrate of the prison, Zakaria Imtiaz, has already been suspended on charges of negligence of duty over this incident."

Touhidul Islam also said that necessary steps will be taken if evidence of negligence of duty is found against anyone else during the course of the investigation.
