
Assistant Returning officer Bibhor Biswas said they have received feedback from many poll centres . Polling was peaceful everywhere, he said.
However, opposition alliance-backed Mayor candidate Ahsan Habib Kamal has 'doubts' on whether the polls will be fair.
"My victory is certain given the response in the first one and a half hour of polling," he had said after casting his vote at the Barisal Polytechnic Institute in the morning.
"I don't know what would happen after noon," Kamal said.
One of his supporters was shot during the campaign.
Kamal said he would not accept the outcome if the polls were not 'fair'.
He said he had heard of 'trouble' at the Bhatikana Government Primary School in Ward number 13. He, however, could not specify what the 'trouble' was all about.
Outgoing Mayor Awami League-backed Shawkat Hossain Hiran, contesting the polls with 'television' symbol, however, expressed satisfaction over the poll atmosphere.
There are 211,257 voters in the city, 103,632 of whom are females.
It has 100 voting centres in 10 reserved and 30 general wards.
Three aspirants are in the race for Mayor while 116 candidates are vying for the general ward councillor posts and 45 for the reserved councillor posts.
Khulna’s Regional Election Official Mujibor Rahman is the returning officer.
Electronic voting machines are being used in 12 booths of two voting centres in Barisal’s ward-16. A total of 4,281 voters can use the machines.
Barisal City Corporation was established on Jul 25, 2002.
