The deputy commissioner of Gulshan police has been transferred days after a flash march by activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, whose activities are banned.
M Tanvir Ahmed was attached to Dhaka Metropolitan Police Headquarters under an order issued on Wednesday.
The transfer came hours after Gulshan Police chief Md Daud Hossain was withdrawn and attached to the DMP’s central reserve office.
Both transfers took effect immediately. Tanvir’s order said he was being attached to headquarters “for administrative reasons until further notice”.
The move comes five days after Awami League activists staged a flash march in Gulshan on Sept 11.
Crude bombs were detonated during the incident and police fired rubber bullets to disperse the participants.
According to police, around 150 to 200 people gathered in an alley off Road 3 in Gulshan around 11:45am and attempted to bring out a procession.
When police moved to disperse them, the marchers threw crude bombs at the officers, police said.
Police then fired two rounds of rubber bullets to break up the procession.
Five unexploded crude bombs were recovered from the scene.
A case was filed with Gulshan Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act over the incident.
The case names 118 people and includes another 80 to 100 unidentified suspects.
Police said 83 people had been arrested in the case as of Sept 14. Of them, 24 had been placed on remand.
