A court has placed four people, including a leader of the Awami League, on remand for questioning in an Explosives Act case filed over cocktail explosions in front of Jatrabari Police Station in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order on Tuesday following a petition by the investigating officer.
State prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid shared the information about the remand.
The suspects are Raihan Uddin, office secretary of the No. 6 unit of Ward 32 of Dhaka South Awami League’s Bangshal unit; Russell Khan; Md Aladdin; and Abdullah Mashur Ashrafi.
The judge ordered Raihan to be remanded for four days and the other three suspects for two days each.
Multiple crude bomb explosions occurred in front of Jatrabari Police Station on the night of Sept 18. Police said they identified one person by reviewing CCTV footage from nearby locations. Raihan, an Awami League leader, was subsequently arrested during a raid in the Bangshal area on Saturday.
Later, based on information provided by him, police recovered four crude bombs wrapped in red tape from inside a sack of brick chips in the parking area on the ground floor of a 10-storey building on Zain Saha Road in Lalbagh around 12:15am. The DMP’s bomb disposal team later defused the devices.
Based on information obtained while questioning Raihan, police conducted a raid in the Dogair area of Demra and arrested Russell, Alauddin and Abdullah.
On Sunday, the case’s investigating officer Mohammad Golam Mostofa, inspector of DB Police’s Wari Zone, sought five days’ remand for the suspect. The court sent them to jail and scheduled Tuesday for a hearing on the remand request.
The suspects were produced before the court during Tuesday’s hearing.
Prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid said, “On behalf of the state, we presented arguments in favour of remand. The defence lawyers sought cancellation of the remand and bail for the suspects. The court subsequently ordered four days’ remand for one suspect and two days for the other three.”
Jatrabari Police Station Sub-Inspector Jewel Rana filed the case under the Explosives Act on Saturday over the crude bomb explosions.
