Police have arrested two people over crude bomb explosions at Dhaka’s Kamalapur Railway Station, including a railway electrician who they say is also a leader of the banned Chhatra League.
The suspects have been identified as Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain Raihan, 32, and Mohammad Sanmun, 23.
Raihan has worked as an electrician for Bangladesh Railway since April 2015 but had been absent from work for the past three months, police said.
They identified him as an organising secretary of the Chhatra League’s Shahjahanpur unit. Meanwhile, Sanmun has been described as an active member of the Shahjahanpur unit of the Jubo League.
Mohammad Harun Or Rashid, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Motijheel Division, gave details of the arrests at a media briefing on Monday.
What Police Say
Harun said two crude bombs exploded between pillars 29 and 30 on Platform No. 2 of Kamalapur Railway Station on the night of Sept 19.
Railway officials and police inspected the scene before investigators began trying to identify those involved using technological and intelligence data and information from sources, he said.
“Those involved went into hiding immediately after the incident. We later arrested two people involved in the incident using technology, intelligence analysis and information from reliable sources,” Harun said.
Police claim Raihan and Sanmun admitted their involvement during questioning.
According to investigators, the pair said the crude bombs were detonated to create fear among the public and help make an Awami League-backed “lockdown” programme a success.
Their statements could not be independently verified.
Harun said investigators had identified several other people suspected of involvement but declined to disclose their identities, citing the ongoing investigation.
“Some provide the funding, some coordinate, some throw the crude bombs and some record videos. We are examining these aspects,” he said.
Police are also investigating whether Raihan and Sanmun were involved in other incidents.
A case has been filed with Dhaka Railway Police Station under the Special Powers Act and Sections 3 and 4 of the Explosive Substances Act, according to Harun.
Asked about the police’s ability to prevent such attacks following crude bomb explosions and incidents of trains being set on fire at Kamalapur and elsewhere, Harun said preventive measures were regularly taken on the basis of intelligence.
“I would not say there has been any intelligence failure on our part,” he said.
“If there had been an intelligence failure, many more incidents would have occurred.”
