Tawfique Nawaz, husband of former minister Dipu Moni and a prominent Supreme Court lawyer, has died in Dhaka.

The 76-year old died at Continental Hospital, formerly United Hospital, on Tuesday night.

At around 11:45pm, the hospital’s duty manager told bdnews24.com: “He passed away a short while ago. For now, that is all the information we can provide.”

Nawaz had suffered a brain stroke on Jul 17, 2019, and remained seriously ill afterwards.

He was unconscious for three weeks following the stroke and underwent a micro-stenting procedure at United Hospital on Jul 26 that year, performed by specialists from India.

A specialist from Singapore saw him the following day, while preparations were later made to take him to Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai for neuro-rehabilitation.

His brother, physician Taimor Nawaz, supervised his treatment at the time.

Nawaz had continued to suffer from health complications in the years since the stroke.

More recently, relatives took him to court in a wheelchair so that he could meet Dipu Moni, who is in prison.

A Supreme Court lawyer by profession, Nawaz was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Transparency International, Bangladesh.

Outside his legal career, he was known for his interest in classical music and played the flute.

Dipu Moni’s lawyer Gazi Foysal Islam said an application would be filed with the Munshiganj deputy commissioner on Wednesday morning seeking her parole to attend her husband’s funeral.

Whether she gets parole will depend on the deputy commissioner’s decision, Foysal told bdnews24.com.

Dipu Moni, arrested after 2024 July Uprising, is now held at District Jail, Munshiganj.

A graduate of Dhaka Medical College, she served in the Awami League government as foreign minister and education minister, among other portfolios.

A decision on the time and venue of her husband's funeral prayers and burial will be made after Wednesday afternoon, a family member, identified only as Tipu, said.
