BNP Leader Mirza Abbas under close observation after brain surgery in Dhaka

Doctors say the BNP leader's CT scan results are "good" following an emergency operation

BNP Standing Committee member and Political Advisor to the prime minister Mirza Abbas remains under close observation after undergoing brain surgery at Evercare Hospital Dhaka.

Doctors have kept the former minister in intensive monitoring since the operation on Friday.

BNP Health Affairs Secretary Rafiqul Islam said a CT scan of Abbas’s brain was conducted on Saturday morning and the report came back “good”.

“He is under close monitoring and members of the medical board are watching him round the clock,” he said.

Abbas fell ill after iftar on Wednesday and was admitted to Evercare Hospital in the Bashundhara area later that night after his condition deteriorated.

Earlier, BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan had said efforts were under way to take Abbas to Singapore for advanced treatment, with discussions ongoing with several hospitals about an air ambulance.

However, his condition worsened on Friday, prompting the medical board to recommend immediate surgery after reviewing the CT scan report.

According to Rafiqul, the board decided on the operation following a virtual meeting after the scan indicated complications.

Abbas was taken to the operating theatre at 3:10pm on Friday and underwent the procedure.

Doctors said he will remain under close observation for 72 hours following the surgery.

The medical board includes professors Ali Uzzaman Joardar, Kazi Din Mohammad, Shahabuddin Talukdar, Raziul Haque, Syed Said Ahmed, Kader Sheikh and Shafiqul Islam, along with physicians from the hospital.
