Despite a slight rise in temperatures, Bangladesh is gripped by a sharp winter chill, with dense fog keeping the sunshine at bay.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the current conditions are likely to persist for few more days, with a cold wave expected to sweep across parts of the country by the middle of the week.
Assistant Meteorologist Afroza Sultana said on Sunday that temperatures had risen slightly in different regions over the past 24 hours, but dense fog meant the cold still felt intense.
She added that similar conditions were expected on Sunday and Monday, with night temperatures likely to fall slightly on Tuesday.
The lowest temperature recorded in the past 24 hours was 9.8 degrees Celsius in Kishoreganj's Nikli, while the highest was 28.6 degrees Celsius in Teknaf, the BMD said.
In its five-day forecast, the Met Office warned of moderate to dense fog in parts of the country from midnight to morning on Sunday and Monday, with some areas seeing fog linger until midday. The fog could temporarily disrupt air, river and road transport.
Night and daytime temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged during this period, though the cold feeling may continue in many areas.
From Tuesday to Thursday, moderate to dense fog is forecast in some river basin areas during the night and early morning, with lighter fog elsewhere. Night temperatures may dip slightly on Tuesday, while daytime temperatures could fall marginally on Wednesday before rising again by Thursday.
