A student of Agrani Girls School and College has died after drowning in the pond on the Eden Mohila College campus in Dhaka.
The incident occurred around 10:30am on Monday when the victim, Sanjida Akter, entered the pond with a friend to learn swimming, according to Lalbagh Police Station chief Mostafa Kamal.
College staff later rescued her and rushed her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared her dead.
Sanjida was a second-year higher secondary student and lived with her family in Dhaka’s Chawkbazar area.
“From what we’ve learnt, the two friends left home in the morning intending to learn how to swim. They entered the pond on the Eden College campus, but Sanjida drowned while the other girl managed to get out,” said Kamal.
“College staff found a faint pulse and took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital immediately, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.”
Inspector Md Faruk of the DMCH Police Outpost confirmed that Sanjida had been brought in around 11am and was declared dead by the doctor on duty.
