A 10-year-old boy has died and dozens more have been treated for injuries following an earthquake that struck parts of Bangladesh.
As many as 41 people were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the wake of the 5.7-magnitude earthquake that jolted the country on Friday morning. Six of them were students from Dhaka University, according to Inspector Md Faruk, chief of the DMCH Police Outpost.
The child, identified by a single name as Omar, was brought to DMCH with serious injuries after the eave of a building collapsed on him in the Gabtoli area of Narsingdi Sadar Upazila. He was declared dead shortly after arrival.
The boy’s father, Delowar Hossain Ujjal, has been hospitalised with critical injuries at DMCH.
The family rushed the two of them to the hospital around 1:15pm.
Omar’s uncle Zakir Hossain said, “Delowar Hossain was taking his son and two daughters out when the earthquake struck. The eave of a house broke and collapsed onto them, injuring the two.”
“Locals took them to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. The two were then brought from there to Dhaka Medical, where the doctor declared Omar dead.”
Delowar’s two daughters have been admitted to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital with injuries.
The family hails from Kishoreganj’s Pakundia Upazila, but were living in a rented house in Narsingdi’s Gabtoli.
