Another child with measles symptoms has died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. This has pushed up the death toll due to measles and related symptoms at the hospital to 34.
The child died at 2:40am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment, said Dr Jhantu Sarkar, senior store officer of the hospital.
The child hailed from Mahmudpur village in Bhaluka Upazila. He was admitted to the hospital's measles isolation ward on May 17 with measles symptoms.
A notification sent by MMCH on Tuesday morning regarding measles patients said that 34 more children were admitted to the hospital with measles symptoms in the 24 hours from 8am on Monday to 8am on Tuesday. Currently, 104 children are underdoing treatment at the hospital, while 32 children have recovered and left the hospital.
According to hospital sources, a total of 1,452 children were admitted to the hospital with measles symptoms from Mar 17 to Tuesday morning. Of these, 1,314 children have recovered and returned home.
Admission of patients with measles symptoms to the paediatric department of MMCH began in February this year. The number of patients started increasing from mid-March.
A separate isolation ward with 64 beds is operational in the hospital for the treatment of measles patients. Three medical teams are providing treatment there.
MMCH Measles Isolation Ward Focal Person Md Golam Mawla said, "The child who died today (early on Tuesday) was suffering from other complex diseases in addition to measles symptoms. He died mainly due to increasing physical complications.
He said, "When infected with measles, the immunity of patients decreases. Then the risk of pneumonia and other infections increases. We see that there has been a high dropout rate in the pneumonia vaccine.”
Mawla said, "Many children in the country suffer from malnutrition. Malnutrition increases the risk of infection, and measles makes the complications more severe. Since there is no ICU for children in the hospital, serious patients are being treated using the 'bubble CPAP' method. If their condition deteriorates, they are sent to Dhaka."
