The National Consensus Commission has resumed talks with experts amid continuing uncertainty over how the July National Charter will be implemented, despite a formal commitment from most political parties.
The fresh round of discussions took place on Wednesday at the LD Hall in parliament.
According to a commission media statement, five legal experts joined the session -- two in person and three virtually.
The move follows the official signing of the “July National Charter 2025” on Friday at the South Plaza of the parliament, held in the presence of Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, who chairs the commission.
Out of the 30 parties and coalitions involved in the dialogue process, 25 signed the charter, committing to carry out the commission’s recommended reforms.
Five political parties, however, have still not signed the agreement, leaving questions over full-scale implementation.
The commission has pledged to submit recommendations to the government on how to execute the Charter’s proposals.
Speaking at the signing event, commission Vice-Chairman Ali Riaz said: “We believe our effort -- the collective effort toward reform -- won’t succeed overnight. A document alone cannot guarantee that.
“But we hope this national instrument will lead to real action, and that action will come swiftly.”
At Wednesday’s meeting, retired Supreme Court Appellate Division justice MA Matin and Barrister Imran Siddique attended in person.
Former justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury, Dhaka University Law Faculty Dean Muhammad Ekramul Haque, and senior Supreme Court lawyer Sharif Bhuiyan joined virtually.
They reviewed different proposals on how the Charter could be enforced and held discussions based on their advice.
The commission will hold another internal meeting on Thursday morning, followed by a second round of talks with the same experts at 2pm.
