Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid placed ‘Sheikh Hasina University Bill, 2017’ before MPs on Tuesday.

It was later forwarded to the parliamentary standing committee on the education ministry for vetting. The committee was given 45 days to examine the Bill.

On Monday, another Bill was passed in parliament to set up a science and technology university named after Hasina’s mother Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib in Jamalpur.

Bangladesh has 40 public universities now.

In the Bill on proposed Sheikh Hasina University, Minister Nahid said the move aimed to advance higher education and research.

He said it was ‘very much’ necessary and rational to establish the university in order to create new entrepreneurs and jobs through a ‘business incubator’ in the university as part of the government’s plan to make Bangladesh a developed country by 2041.

The government has also planned to establish a cantonment named after Hasina in Patuakhali.
