The district’s Superintendent of Police Anisur Rahman said the incident took place around midday at the Nandiaparha Degree College centre, but details were yet to be known.
“The clash erupted when supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami launched the attack to occupy the centre. Police opened fire on the presiding officer’s order,” he said.
Locals said the dead activist, Saddam Hossain, was a BNP supporter, although official confirmation of his identity was not immediately available.
