Police have recovered the body of a 15-year-old domestic worker who died after falling from the roof of a residential building in the capital’s Banani.
Banani Police Inspector Mehedi Hasan said they recovered the body around 3pm on Sunday.
The victim, identified only as Pinky, was a native of Sunamganj.
She had been working at an apartment on the second floor of a nine-storey building at a house in block D.
"It is not possible to jump from the second-floor balcony; she fell from the roof," he said.
"We are still investigating whether she jumped or was pushed."
The apartment where the girl worked is owned by Rakibul Hasan, who lives there with his wife and two children.
Following the incident, an angry crowd gathered at the site, alleging that the teenager had been "tortured" and thrown off the building.
Police have been deployed to restore order as authorities scrutinise CCTV footage.
"In one clip, the girl is seen opening the door and leaving the flat alone. We are now verifying if she went to the roof by herself or if someone accompanied her," Mehedi added.
Rakibul told police that another domestic worker, a mutual acquaintance of Pinky, also worked at the house, suggesting that a dispute between them regarding a mobile phone conversation might have led to the tragedy.
The body has been sent to a hospital morgue for an postmortem, and police said they would interrogate the employer and the other staff member if necessary.
