Assailants have broken into a house and hacked a college student to death in the Kajla area of Dhaka’s Jatrabari.
Attacked with sharp weapons, the woman’s mother had her hand cut off at the wrist, while two of her siblings were also injured in the attack.
The deceased, 20-year-old Dia, was a student of Shaikh Burhanuddin Post Graduate College in Dhaka.
Her mother Nusrat Jahan Mousumi, younger sister Jaya, 12, and brother Muaz Ahmed, 15, were also injured in the incident.
They have been admitted to a private hospital. Nabu Ullah, Dia’s father, was not present at home when the incident occurred.
Police believe the incident early on Tuesday, was motivated by a financial feud.
The attacker, 40-year-old Abu Musa, has been arrested. He is undergoing medical treatment while under police guard.
Musa is a tenant of the house and a construction work contractor. The attack followed a dispute over payment for construction work on the house.
Md Billal, the driver of the family, brought all the victims to the hospital. He told the media that Musa, the construction contractor for the building, attacked and injured the victims around 2:30am to 3am on Tuesday. Billal was also injured in the scuffle. Neighbours rushed to the rescue of the family when they heard their screams. They detained Musa as well.
Billal said that Musa had been conducting construction work on the 10-storey building for the last few years. There was a financial dispute regarding the payment for the work, leading to Musa’s attack.
Nabu Ullah was at a hospital at the time of the incident, looking after his youngest child, who was sick, Billal said.
Jatrabari Police Station chief (OC) Mohammad Raju said a family was attacked in Jatrabari’s Kajla early in the morning and a college girl was murdered. Three others in the family have been hospitalised, he said.
The OC said police initially believe the incident was triggered by a financial dispute, but they are investigating other motives as well.
