Miscreants who killed Jubo Dal leader Golam Kibria in Dhaka's Pallabi and fled in a battery-powered rickshaw also shot the driver for “not going fast enough”.
The 20-year-old driver named Md Arif was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 9pm on Monday.
A passerby named Piarul Islam took Arif to the hospital. He told journalists that when Kibria was shot, Arif was waiting for a passenger on the road between C Block and A Block of Mirpur No. 11.
“Then two men wearing helmets came running, got into his rickshaw, and told him to drive away quickly as they threatened to shoot him dead otherwise.
“As soon as he started the rickshaw, one of them shot Arif in the back and fled the scene.”
Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Outpost Inspector Md Faruk said, “Arif is undergoing treatment. Doctors have said that he is out of danger.”
On Monday at 7pm, three masked men wearing helmets entered a hardware shop near C Block, close to the old police station, and shot Golam Kibria at close range.
Local residents said Kibria was the member secretary of the Pallabi unit of the BNP’s youth wing.
Pallabi Police chief Shafiul Alam said they are investigating who shot him at close range and why.
