Bangladesh Navy, which is hosting the three-day event that started from Monday, said hydrographic work was “fundamental to develop and sustain a blue economy” in Bangladesh after the settlement of the maritime boundary with its neighbours.

The Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed inaugurated the conference.

Egypt, India, Myanmar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UK and associate member states Australia, France, Oman, Seychelles, and the US are taking part.

Delegates from Russia and Sudan have joined as observers. Several internationally renowned organisations from this field are also attending.

Bangladesh is the Chairman of the NIOHC for the year 2015-2016. It was the NIOHC Vice-Chairman for 2014-2015.

The Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operations) and NIOHC Chair Rear Admiral M Makbul Hossain is presiding over the conference.

The conference will discuss hydrographic activities and its achievements, mutual co-operation, technical assistance and training support.

Bangladesh Navy says it has already published international-standard charts, which have been well received by mariners worldwide.

The Navy charts, by ensuring maritime safe passage along the Bay of Bengal, contribute greatly to Bangladesh’s sea-borne trade, it said in a statement.

In the context of worldwide technological advancement, the navy has also taken steps to produce Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC).
