Iran’s Araghchi says UN has lost credibility and trust

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says trust in the United Nations has been lost, Al Jazeera reports.

Araghchi made the remarks after arriving in New York ahead of the UN General Assembly.

He said his visit came amid a situation that effectively remained a state of war following the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

“Naturally, our primary objective is to utilise a major international platform to defend the legitimacy, rights, and interests of the Iranian people,” Al Jazeera quoted him as saying.

Araghchi said the UN had lost credibility because of its failure to uphold international peace and security.

The UN General Assembly opened under the theme “restoring trust”.

“This reflects a universal acknowledgement that trust in the organisation has eroded, or vanished entirely, due to its failure to effectively maintain international peace and security,” Araghchi said.

He accused some countries of acting with impunity while disregarding international institutions and international law.

Araghchi also criticised Western and European countries over their response to Israel’s actions, saying that they had remained silent despite presenting themselves as defenders of human rights and humanitarian law.
