Apple has released iOS 27, its major new iPhone software update, alongside upgrades for Macs, Apple Watch and Apple TV.

The Independent highlights a substantially redesigned Siri as the biggest change, with new artificial intelligence capabilities and access to personal information stored across the device.

The update also includes performance improvements, child safety protections and changes to several Apple apps.

iOS 27 is available for every iPhone that can run iOS 26, including the iPhone 11 and newer models.

Some older devices could benefit noticeably from the performance improvements.

However, the new AI-powered Siri is restricted to the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models, and the device must be set to English.

Users must first update their iPhone to the latest software and then join a waitlist for access.

Before the new Siri becomes available, the iPhone also needs to process information from across the device so the assistant can use relevant personal data.

The process runs in the background and can take a considerable amount of time, although it may already have been completed by an earlier update.

According to The Independent, the revamped Siri combines advanced AI with access to personal data, allowing users to make more complex requests and ask it to retrieve information or perform actions on their behalf.

For example, users can ask Siri to find a photograph from a particular trip or locate information shared in Messages, even if it was sent years earlier.

Siri can also perform tasks across apps using natural language, including sending messages and creating calendar events.

Apple has described the update as part of its broader push to bring useful AI features to its devices, following years of promises about expanding Siri’s capabilities.
