Nigar Sultana set to step down as Bangladesh T20I captain

Nigar Sultana, who has faced criticism following Bangladesh’s disappointing Asia Cup campaign, has told the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that she no longer wants to lead the T20 side after the Asian Games. 

She will, however, continue as captain of the 50-over team.

Rafiqul Islam Babu, chairman of the BCB women's wing, told bdnews24.com: "We received an email stating she will not continue as T20I captain after the Asian Games, though she will remain in charge of the 50-over (ODI) format."

When Nigar decided to relinquish the captaincy, the Bangladesh team was in Japan to participate in the Asian Games. 

Eyeing a gold medal, Nigar's team will face China in the first quarter-final on Friday.

Rafiqul’s comments reflected that Nigar’s decision to step down right before the start of the tournament caught them off guard.

"Since the Asian Games is currently taking place, her decision to step down during the tournament has left us somewhat embarrassed. 

“Once the Games conclude, we will discuss the matter and reach a decision."

Nigar was appointed captain of the T20 team in 2022. To date, she has led the side in 80 T20 matches, holding the record for most matches as Bangladesh captain after surpassing Salma Khatun’s milestone of 65 matches.

Under Nigar’s leadership, the team recorded 32 victories -- also a national record -- alongside 47 defeats.

She took over the ODI captaincy in 2021, leading the team in 47 matches in the 50-over format, securing 15 wins and suffering 26 losses.
